The Aerospace Center for Excellence on the SUN ‘n FUN Convention Campus has a year-round calendar of events that includes educational opportunities for students of all ages. Several activities, including an introduction to the new Florida Historical Annex, are included in the price of admission to Aerospace Discovery at the Florida Air Museum and many are sponsored events with no admission or parking charges. Classroom to the Sky – Educators are invited to learn how aviation can offer new perspectives and play a major role in simplifying a student’s understanding of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) curriculums. Breakfast, a one-hour “ground school”, free admission to Aerospace Discovery at the Florida Air Museum with a complimentary one year membership for licensed teachers, and the opportunity to experience flight in a general aviation aircraft are included in the teacher admission rate of $20. Rusty Pilots – Developed by AOPA, in partnership with local flight training providers to create the best environment to get you back in the air, Rusty Pilots offers the ground instruction required for a flight review. No FAA checkride or test – might not even need a medical. Life may have gotten in the way but the dream of flight can be yours again. We will help you brush up on your aviation knowledge and understand what’s changed in aviation since you last took the controls – and it’s all FREE! Astronaut Greg Harbaugh, a veteran of 4 difference space missions, will be returning to SUN ‘n FUN to speak with campers at Aerospace Discovery Weekend (formerly Wings ‘n Things), a 3-day youth aerospace adventure introducing students to the dynamic world of aviation. Youth groups will find unique opportunities including how the science of sports relates to flying an airplane. A “First Flight” opportunity is offered to students (ages 8-17) who have never flown in a general aviation aircraft. Highlights include Designing and Launching a Rocket; Climbing a Rockwall; Flight Simulators; Dodgeball; Geocaching; Bounce House; Martial Arts Demonstrations; Solar and Stellar Exploration; and, over 10 interactive STEM learning stations. A craft area offers younger campers the opportunity to create a space vehicle, design clothespins airplanes, create a butterfly and/or an aluminum picture. One price per attendee includes 3 days of activities, camping and admission to Aerospace Discovery at the Florida Air Museum. The Albert Whitted Airport Preservation Society in partnership with the Aerospace Center for Excellence (ACE) is proud to announce an addition to the ACE on the SUN ‘n FUN Convention Campus – The Florida Aerospace Historical Annex. This building showcases the rich history of aviation in the great state of Florida with artifacts from National Airlines, the flight of the Benoist, and interactive educational displays. The Annex is offered as part of the admission to Aerospace Discovery at the Florida Air Museum, but will have limited days of operation. A grand opening is scheduled for October 24 and 25 during Aerospace Discovery Weekend. Check the SUN ‘n FUN website for days of operation.
A Salute to Veterans Weekend November 6-7 includes a mid-year fundraiser, Hangar Door Canteen to help support scholarship funding and When Pigs Fly South a BBQ Competition featuring classic cars, motorcycles, a Warbird Fly-In and music, along with nearly 50 Kansas City BBQ Chefs.
