On Friday, November 21, 2014 at 12:00 p.m., commemorative bricks will be placed at the Central Florida Aerospace Academy (CFAA), 4175 Medulla Road, Lakeland, FL in recognition of exceptional student performance. The general public is invited to attend the first event of its kind in Lakeland.

28 students aged 16-19 years old, have completed the necessary steps to independently pilot an aircraft from the SUN ‘n FUN Convention Campus since 2010. The aviation industry applauds individuals of all ages for achieving a solo flight. Students at SUN ‘n FUN and flight schools partnering with the programs are mentored by many aerospace leaders. Flight lessons are offered through scholarship funding made available annually by SUN ‘n FUN to any qualified Polk County student. For each of the last two years, 6-7 students have piloted aircraft from Lakeland, Florida to Oshkosh, Wisconsin to participate in the world’s largest Fly-In, EAA AirVenture. Students were required to prepare the aircraft and make all flight plans.

The students being recognized at the brick laying ceremony compose the first group to have their names placed at the school. In addition to flight lessons, CFAA students are invited quarterly to Jet Blue University and are introduced to the demands made from within the aerospace industry. CFAA maintains a 100% graduation rate from a public high school and are leaving high school to be enrolled in military academies, flight and mechanic programs, aviation administration degrees and/or engineering programs. Because of the technical training and dual enrollment options in Traviss Career Academy and Polk State College, students are often prepared to accept a high-skill, high wage job immediately following graduation.

Aviation education experiences are offered year-round for students of all ages on the SUN ‘n FUN Convention Campus. Proceeds from any event at SUN ‘n FUN, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, are returned to STEM-based education programs and activities. Take time to visit Aerospace Discovery at the Florida Air Museum with your family.
