LAKELAND, FL – March 29, 2013 – SUN ‘n FUN’s mission is to preserve and enhance the future of flight through world-class events, inspiring and educating people of all ages. Make plans now to be a part of a variety of opportunities, including entertainment and educational offerings being presented during the 39th Annual SUN ‘n FUN International Fly-In & Expo, April 9-14,2013, in Lakeland, Florida.

Throughout the week forums at the Central Florida Aerospace Academy and workshops held on the SUN ‘n FUN grounds offer Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and Inspector Authorization (IA) certificate renewals to attendees. Plan your day by using new participation tips where Aviation Tracks have been identified. Take time to pick up a few pointers as a new or seasoned pilot at Pilot Proficiency Workshops being offered in the Florida Air Museum. Learn about plans to transition the Museum to an Aviation Center for Innovation and Exploration year round.
Newly added in 2013 are forums held in the redesigned and contoured Paradise City. Light Sport Aircraft static displays and an open grass runway will allow aircraft to arrive and depart throughout the day off the main runway. Exhibits and vendors have been added to the area. All PARADISE CITY FORUMS for 2013 will be held in the Flight Operations Tent.

Teachers should register at www.sun-n-fun.org for a seat in the Saturday morning Aerospace Educators Workshop. Starting the morning in the seat of a T-6 with the Geico Skytypers for a photo opportunity, all guests can register for a chance to fly with the Aeroshell Team. Educators in attendance will hear notable presenters like Dr. Jeffrey Bennett offering information about curriculum options for incorporating new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) components and techniques into the classroom as well as materials and funding options. Former Astronaut Story Musgrave is the guest speaker at the luncheon. The 20th Annual Ray Lien Award will be presented to the Aerospace Educator of the Year at this time..

From Tuesday through Sunday, students will be offered age specific STEM activities in the Piedmont Hangar with presentations by MOSI, NASA, the Glazer Children’s Museum, Janet’s Planet and Reptile Discovery for younger visitors. Older students will be offered guided tours of the SUN ‘n FUN grounds, including a visit to The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Red Tail Squadron, and the RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit, a story of the Tuskegee Airmen. Included on the tour will be interactive learning displays in the Florida Air Museum, simulator rides and dynamic introductions to static displays of aircraft on the grounds by pilots, educators and historians. Captain Judy Rice will introduce students to the components of her around-the-world “Think Global” flight scheduled for 2014.

Opening the evening activities for the week, on Tuesday, April 9th, students from the Harrison School of the Arts will present “Every Kid Flies.” Adding the Arts to the STEM courses at SUN ‘n FUN, this original musical contrasts the emotion and exhilaration of flight with the physical and engineering concepts necessary to build and fly any aircraft. This features original music and lyrics and the story is appropriate for all ages. Yes, every kid flies – in their own way!

Jet Blue Airways, arriving on Thursday, April 11th at 10:45 a.m., will be 90 students from New York City and Orlando who are participating in a number of Jet Blue University learning programs. Eagles Nest students are constructing kitplanes and will be attending airplane construction workshops to have first-hand experience from the experts. Cadets from CFAA, the Air Force Jr. ROTC,and Civil Air Patrol will be on hand to partner with the visiting Jet Blue students as well as cadets from Norway, the United Kingdom, and around the U.S.

Inspiring presentations with several speakers, will be offered throughout the week. Major Brian Shul (Ret.), Air-Force Fighter Pilot and author of “Over the Rainbow at MACH 3” presents on Wednesday. Air-America Veterans making their first public appearance at SUN ‘n FUN on Friday will share the week with 9 of the courageous women who were the first pilots known as the Women Airforce Service Pilots or WASPs. These amazing women earned Congressional Gold Medals in 2009, We celebrate the story of their 70th Anniversary on Thursday. The FedEx Boeing 727 donated to SUN ‘n FUN to be used as an interactive classroom will be formally accepted with the FedEx Executive Team and local staff members on Friday, April 12th. The $650,000 donation (named Paul) is the 62nd aircraft contributed by FedEx to education but SUN ‘n FUN can proudly claim that it is the first to be donated outside of a university setting. The aircraft will be used initially by students at CFAA as well as Polk State College for students in aviation curriculums. Everyone will have an opportunity to tour “Paul” during the event. Student field trips after the fly-In are on the calendar.

Saturday is a Tribute to Education and the day also opens Florida Resident weekend offers. Start your morning with Hot Air Balloons coloring the morning sky (weather permitting) and come back on Sunday without charge. Throughout the week many exhibitors are offering hands-on training sessions with the latest in aeronautics technology. There are afternoon airshows, exhibits, vendors and food options including an International Food area. On Friday and Saturday nights illuminated aircraft will entertain in the darkened sky.
